St. Moritz is Switzerland's most glamorous mountain resort — a village in the Engadin Valley at 1,822 metres altitude that has been a playground for European royalty, aristocracy and the global ultra-wealthy since the British first came to ski here in the 1860s. It has hosted the Winter Olympics twice (1928 and 1948) and the Cresta Run bobsled course here is one of sport's most exclusive and dangerous challenges. The skiing — 350 kilometres of pistes in the Corviglia, Corvatsch and Diavolezza areas — is excellent and challenging, with reliable snow conditions from December to April. The Cresta Run (skeleton racing, open to amateur bookings on certain days) and the iconic horse racing on the frozen lake are uniquely St. Moritz experiences. The Segantini Museum (Swiss Alpine art) and the Engadin Museum (local history) provide cultural depth between ski runs. The lake at the valley bottom freezes solid enough in winter for the Snow Polo World Cup, golf on ice, horse racing and cricket — extraordinary scenes. In summer, St. Moritz pivots to hiking, cycling, mountain biking and sailing on Lake St. Moritz. The Engadin Valley itself — with its unique Romansh language, distinctive architecture and exceptional light — is beautifully explored by bike or on foot. Bernina Express train journey through the valley is one of the world's most scenic rail routes.
