Miami Beach

Miami Beach is technically a separate city from Miami, connected to the mainland by several causeways, but functionally its most famous face — an 8-mile barrier island of ocean beach, Art Deco architecture and international nightlife that represents the most extreme version of Miami's warm-weather, fashion-forward, multicultural beach culture. South Beach (SoBe) is the most densely Art Deco section — Ocean Drive's candy-coloured 1920s and 1930s hotels, the Art Deco Welcome Center and the Bass Museum of Art are the cultural anchors. The beach itself is excellent. Mid-Beach and North Beach are quieter and more residential. Collins Avenue provides the luxury hotel corridor. Art Basel Miami Beach (December) transforms the area into the hemisphere's largest contemporary art event. Lincoln Road Mall is excellent for outdoor dining and people-watching. The nightclub scene — LIV, Story, E11EVEN — is one of the world's most international. The Wolfsonian-FIU museum of design and propaganda art is outstanding.
