Goreme

Göreme, at the heart of the Cappadocia region, is the main village base for exploring the lunar landscape of volcanic tuff formations, cave churches and underground cities of one of Turkey's most extraordinary destinations. The village itself is built among the fairy chimneys — the characteristic volcanic rock formations — and its cave hotels, boutique restaurants and hot-air balloon operations make it the most atmospheric base in the region. The Göreme Open Air Museum, a UNESCO-protected 1km walk from the village, is the finest concentration of rock-cut cave churches in Cappadocia — a Byzantine monastic complex from the 10th–13th centuries with richly painted frescoes, coloured vaulted ceilings and extraordinary carved interiors. The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) has the best-preserved frescoes, its low light having protected the colours. The Tokali Church (Buckle Church), the largest in the museum complex, is exceptional. Sunrise hot-air balloon flights from Göreme — watching dozens of balloons rise over the pink and orange valleys as the light changes — are among the world's most memorable travel experiences; book weeks in advance in high season. The Rose Valley (sunset), Red Valley (sunrise), Love Valley and Pigeon Valley are accessible on foot or bicycle from the village. Cave hotel accommodation here is genuinely atmospheric — rooms carved from the soft volcanic rock maintain comfortable temperatures year-round. April–June and September–November are the best times to visit.
