Eindhoven is the Netherlands' design capital — a formerly industrial city transformed by decades of Philips innovation into one of Europe's most creative urban environments. The city hosts Dutch Design Week (October), the world's largest design event, and its concentration of design studios, tech companies and creative industries gives it an energy distinct from any other Dutch city. The Strijp-S area, a former Philips factory complex beautifully converted into a cultural quarter, is the city's most vibrant destination — filled with studios, concept stores, restaurants and the extraordinary Klokgebouw (Clock Building) that hosts events year-round. The Van Abbemuseum is one of the Netherlands' most important contemporary art museums, with a strong international collection including major works by El Lissitzky, Picasso and Joseph Beuys. The DAF Museum celebrates Eindhoven's automotive heritage. The city has been transformed into a genuine culinary destination — the Witte Dame (White Lady) building hosts excellent restaurants and design shops. The weekly markets and the excellent Effenaar music venue reflect the city's youthful, international population drawn by TU/e (Eindhoven University of Technology) and the High Tech Campus. Eindhoven is an excellent base for exploring Brabant's baroque churches, the Kempen heathlands and the Belgian border region.
