Andorra la Vella

Andorra la Vella is the capital of Andorra, a tiny co-principality tucked in the Pyrenees between France and Spain and governed jointly by the French President and the Spanish Bishop of Urgell — a constitutional quirk dating back to 1278. At 1,023 metres, it is the highest capital city in Europe, and the entire principality covers just 468 square kilometres of dramatic mountain scenery. The town itself is primarily a shopping destination — Andorra has no VAT, making electronics, tobacco, alcohol, perfume and ski equipment significantly cheaper than in neighbouring France and Spain. The main shopping thoroughfare along Avinguda Meritxell is lined with enormous duty-free stores. But beyond the commercial strip, Andorra la Vella has a charming old quarter (Barri Antic) with the Casa de la Vall (the historic parliament building) and the Sant Esteve Church, both medieval in origin. The real draw for active visitors is the mountain environment surrounding the capital. Grandvalira, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, is 20 minutes away. The Vallnord ski area, mountain biking in summer, and the Caldea thermal spa complex (one of Europe's largest) are major attractions. Andorra's mountain trails, including sections of the GR7 and the Via Romana, are excellent for hiking. The compact country means every point of interest is accessible within an hour of the capital. Spring and summer are underrated seasons.
