Acapulco, Guerrero, was Mexico's original Pacific resort — a gorgeous natural horseshoe bay that drew jet-setters from the 1950s through 1980s before security issues dramatically reduced international tourism. The bay's natural beauty — turquoise water, lush jungle hills, dramatic cliffs — remains extraordinary, and the iconic cliff divers of La Quebrada (diving from 36 metres into a narrow ocean channel, timing their leaps with the waves since 1934) remain one of Mexico's most spectacular traditions. The historic Fuerte de San Diego is an excellent colonial fort museum. The Zócalo and the cathedral are pleasant. Acapulco is recovering and draws significant Mexican domestic tourism. The seafood is excellent and very fresh. Always check current travel advisories.
